POEME ROMÂNESTI ÎN LIMBI STRĂINE
Tudor ARGHEZI
You’d Hardly Left
You’d hardly left. I had begged you to go away.
I watched you walk along the slow-winding pathway
Until you vanished, at its bottom, into the fields of clover.
Not even one farewell glance had your eyes cast over !
I would have called you back after you’d left,
Would you have heard a shadow’s sign far and bereft ?
I wanted you to go away, I also wanted you to stay.
You lent your ear to the former wish without delay.
My silent thought could stop you not.
Why did you leave ? Should I have called ?
